Why It Matters to Have a Board Certified Expert

Board certification is something offered by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. The board was established in 1974 by the Supreme Court of Texas after the State Bar of Texas requested it. It is the only governing board authorized to certify attorneys in legal specialty areas. While more than 100,000 attorneys are licensed to practice in Texas, only 7,300 are able to be publically recognized as Board Certified specialists in one of 23 areas of law.

Part of the reason so few attorneys are Board Certified is the process it takes to become certified. Attorneys must follow certain application procedures and pass a day-long examination. Each exam covers the specialty area the attorney wishes to be certified in, and the information in the test includes the knowledge, skills, and subject matter concerning the specialty.

The certification is a mark of excellence and a distinguishing accomplishment. If a client has the choice between a personal injury lawyer and a lawyer who is Board Certified in personal injury law, he or she will choose the latter, as the attorney with board certification has demonstrated relevant experience in personal injury and tested for competence in that area of law.

Additionally, board certification is not a one-time achievement. Attorneys who wish to remain Board Certified must be continually involved in the specialty area, which is periodically substantiated with references from other attorneys in the field. Likewise, it requires yearly professional refreshment through the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. All lawyers who remain Board Certified are continually improving their legal knowledge.

If you choose to hire a Board Certified attorney, you know the individual who will represent you is qualified to do the job correctly. Our skilled Houston personal injury attorney is Board Certified in both personal injury trial law and civil trial law. As of 2016, only 351 attorneys in the entire state had achieved certification in both these fields.
